Pop art is a movement that started in the 1950s and grew in the 1960s in America and Britain, drawing inspiration from sources in popular and commercial culture. Artists looked at advertising and mass culture and used it as a source to critique the consumer world.
In the decade from 1965 to 1975, a period of political turmoil and social dissent in Latin America, many artists turned to the language of Pop to express themselves. They used bright colors, flattened imagery, and other cues from mass-circulated pictures to spread radical messages under repressive conditions.
