The American flag is a national symbol open to interpretation. It has long been at the center of conflicts over what it means to be American. Seeing the flag as an object of symbolic design gives designers the chance to translate ideas and meaning into a visual form. Recently the Amplifier Foundation held an American Flag Remix contest. Here are some of the winning designs:

Practice
Take a moment to think about what the flag represents from your perspective. Then, observe the flag as an object of design. How might you redesign the American flag to convey the ideas that you think it represents, or should represent? Sketch out a rough draft on paper and then begin searching for images, colors, patterns, textures on unsplash.com or elsewhere to use in your flag remix.

Create
Open your images in Photoshop. Cut and arrange the pieces to create an original design. Create three or four different designs and then choose one, or more, of your best for your portfolio.
Add your flag remix to your portfolio when you're done.
