filmmaking techniques

learning goal

I can identify image, structure, and sound techniques used by filmmakers to create visual texts.

1

View Now

The opening scene from the film The Darjeeling Limited reveals many of the techniques filmmakers use to communicate visually.

2

Practice

Try to identify the visual techniques used in the opening scene above by writing down techniques you can identify and when they occur (example: close up, 00:31). Use the Visual Glossary as a reference if needed.

Could you find:

establishing shot                                         medium shot

close-up                                                        montage

tilt                                                                  tracking                                                                  pan                                                                over-the-shoulder shot                                        low angle                                                      wide angle

Re-view the scene here to see how you did.

3

Create

Using the Visual Glossary as a reference, find a scene from one of your favorite movies or tv shows and try to identify at least 7 techniques used in the scene. Write each technique and the time used (example: close up, 00:31).

Options for turning in:

1. Attach a link to your video and type the techniques you identified. Post on Schoology.

2. Add the video to your portfolio and a text box identifying techniques. Publish.

Here's an example:

Pan   00:12

Wide Angle   00:48

Close Up   00:51

Establishing Shot   1:50

Medium Shot   2:03

Low Angle   2:27

Over-the-Shoulder   2:45
