Like language conveyed by the written word, there is a language of images. Visual techniques, developed by artists, photographers, graphic designers and filmmakers led to a visual language. Learning to recognize and use this language only requires close viewing and practice.

Practice
The opening scene from the film The Darjeeling Limited reveals many of the techniques filmmakers use to communicate visually.
Identify the visual techniques used in the opening scene above by writing down techniques you can identify, a definition and when they occur (example: close up, 00:31). Use the Film Techniques Toolkit as a reference.

Create
Using the Film Techniques Toolkit as a reference, find a scene from one of your favorite movies or tv shows and try to identify at least 7 techniques used in the scene. Write each technique and the time used (example: close up, 00:31).

Options for turning in:

1. Open a Google or PowerPoint slide. Insert your video. Add a text box and type the techniques you identified. Submit on Schoology.
2. Add the video to your portfolio and a text box identifying techniques. Publish. Copy/paste link to Schoology.
